Spider-Woman has somehow survived 9 issues. She's changed costumes many times. She a 15 year-old brat who somehow doesn't really need to be going to school. With the 10th issue's release, news breaks that the more mature and rewarding Web-Spinners comic will be cancelled after it's 12th issue. For now, Spider-Woman will continue.
What has become a Spider-Man plot standard, we begin in medias res where Spider-Woman, in her latest costume, is having fun battling the Rhino. She ends up on the receiving end of a VW Bug propelled toward a playground full of children.
The story rewinds 4 hours when Maddie sees Jessica Drew in her Spider-Woman costume who is feeling nostlagic but reluctant to return to the super hero world, despite her returning powers. With Madam Web, the trio travel to the Meridian Home to see how Charlotte is doing. Mattie snoops around the facility and (somehow) releases the Rhino from a strange holding cell.
Back to the crisis at hand, Spider-Woman steers the car into the ocean, and re-enters the melee. After tossing the Rhino into a building, the villain emerges with Doc Ock's tentacles popping out of his sides while exclaiming it's "time to test the full extent of my powers." Madam Web crashes to the floor feeling some kind of psychic feedback from the evil released into the world. Next issue, it gets "worse".
I admit I am not a fan of Erik Larson's art on Spidey. When I saw he was drawing this issue, I expected to dislike this installment all the more. However I had the opposite reaction. To me, Larson is fine on the the Savage Dragon where his style seems more appropriate. Likewise, on Spider-Woman, his cartoony simplified drawings seemed more appropriate to the simpler stories of Spider-Woman Vol.3. I think seeing this issue in this style made me more forgiving of the lack of more mature story telling.
My usual complaints not withstanding, I took this issue for what it's worth. It's not a serious story, but a light "fun" story. I'm curious about the mystery villain, and I felt optimistic seeing Jessica in the Spidey suit that she may have a larger role in the series future. Two and a half webs.
