Spider-Man 2: Spider-Sense (Scholastic)

Background

Scholastic is a big name in kids books. I didn't see any books from them for the 2002 Spider-Man movie, but this time they're determined not to be left out of things. They've cooked up a series of eight coloring/activity books, each with a different gimmick. Four of them feature goodies stuck to the front of the book, and one of them is bilingual Spanish/English. Looks promising. Let's open the covers!

  Spider-Man 2: Spider-Sense (Scholastic)
Summary: Includes Silver Gel Pen
Publisher: Scholastic
Writer: Devan Aptekar
Illustrator: Mada Design

Sixteen pages here for a change, almost entirely puzzles. The gimmick is a silver "gel" pen on the cover, and the fact that the pages are printed on red paper, which I guess makes the silver look more impressive. On the back cover is a post-card to cut out and send to a friend.

Total package price is five bucks US. I guess a silver gel pen is worth two or three bucks, and the red paper probably bumps up the price. But only sixteen pages? I can't help but feel they could have upped the book to 32 or 48 pages, even if it cost an extra dollar...

Overall Rating

I'm sorry, but sixteen pages is just way too short for an activity book. I can't give this a passing grade. Two and a half webs is all this skinny little book gets from me.
