Background

This is a re-release of the UK book Marvel Heroes: Movie Theatre (Funtasic).

Story Details

Marvel Heroes: Movie Theater (Reader's Digest)
Summary: Includes Projector & Picture Disks (Spider-Man Appears)
See Original Credits, plus...
Publisher: Reader's Digest Children's Books

This version was created for the American market by Reader's Digest. They have changed the format, and reworked some of the art and much of the layout.

The projector and disks are unchanged, except for the colors - the projector is now blue (instead of red) and the background plastic holding the disks is red (instead of black).

Physically the book is slightly shorter (12" down from 12.25") and quite a bit narrower (11.75" down from 12.75"). New front cover art has been provided. The back cover art has been tweaked a little as well.

Inside, the text appears to be identical to the original version. The layout has been changed, firstly to accommodate the narrower page size. But also, black borders have been added to the smaller images to make them more defined.

In a couple of cases, I noticed that images had been substituted entirely. But that's definitely the exception. By far the majority of the artwork is unchanged from the original.

General Comments

As I mentioned in my review of the original UK version, the storylines are incredibly stodgy and unexciting.

Cyclops fired his optic blast. The powerful beam pushed through the force field and knocked Magneto to the ground.

"Another mutant is attacking me!" Magneto cried in shock.

Ugh. I shudder while reading it. Truly, this is terrible stuff.

Overall Rating

Frankly I'm a totally sucker for anything that includes a projector. Much as I want to despise this book for its bad, bad text, I just have to take one look at the projector and the picture disks to fall in love all over again.

It's like going to bed with a beautiful girl with a horrible accent and inane conversation. I just want to put my finger on her lips and say... "Shhh... don't say a word. I want to remember you just like this. Silent... and naked."

Four sexy webs.

Footnote

The copy I purchased had an original marked price of US$25 on the cover. However that price had been replaced by an official looking sticker with a price of US$20. I wonder if a last-minute marketing decision decided that the retail price had been set a little too far above market expectations?
