Breaking into Comics the Marvel Way #1 (Story 6)

 Posted: Apr 2010

Background

Unlike Marvel’s treasury-sized earlier version of this edition (The Official Marvel Comics Try-Out Book: 1983) is not only comicbook-size, but it really is the official try-out book for a select few artists who were given their big break to have their work showcased in a Marvel Book. The various artists were tapped by writer, editor and talent manager C.B. Cebulski. The anthology has six stories featuring Spider-Man, The X-Men, Iron Man, Bullseye, The Runaways, and the New Avengers

Story 'Modern Love'

Spider-Woman (Drew) and Iron Fist are just putting the finishing touches on a smack-down of Hate Monger who was attempting to rob a bank in Mid-Town. At the conclusion of their fight, the two heroes, still on something of an adrenalin high and with their pulses racing, move in for a passionate embrace, and wind up in bed. This leads to a month-long fling, where the pair is spending as much time with each other as they possibly can.

Week five, however, brings with it a glitch. Danny comes back from the mythical city of K’un-Lun Jessica unloads on him for being inconsiderate and not calling while he was away (even though it was physically impossible for him to do so). Needless to say, a lover’s spat erupts that the New Avengers (in the next room) can overhear. As the argument winds down, the two engage in what can only be described as (off camera) makeup sex, which Logan inadvertently walks in to discover.

General Comments

This is a cute interpersonal story between these two team mates that, while it was never revealed in the team’s title, obviously happened while they were on the run during Civil War. The story hangs together well, and shows us that even the heroes can have personal lives that happen “between the pages” so to speak of their on-going titles.

Overall Rating

Here again, we have a complete story that tells an interesting tale and done so in only eight pages, if only the regular books could be written this succinctly.

Footnote

This story probably took place either shortly after Civil War, while the New Avengers (Spider-Woman, Iron Fist, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Ronan, Ms. Marvel, Dr. Strange, and Mockingbird) are staying with Dr. Strange. Wong, Jessica Jones, and her daughter also appear in this story. Spidey is wearing his black costume.
