Introduction: I've been a fan of Spider-Man since I was four. My first Spider-Man comic was a reprint of the first half of Amazing Spider-Man #103.

I'd get the occasional issue, but it wasn't until 1989 that I started getting serious about it. Thus began the "collecting with a vengeance" period that lasted up to ... well it's still going, actually. It's just spilled into other titles.

Collects: Marvel: Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, Daredevil, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men.

DC: Action Comics, Batman, Brave and the Bold, Checkmate, Detective Comics, Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Superman.

There are other series that I collect as well. Most of them are sporadic, but the ones listed are the ones I get on a regular basis.

Why Spider-Man: There's a reason he's referred to as the "everyman" super-hero; every man can relate to having a bad boss, women trouble, money problems, generally screwing up at life and trying to move on. I fall into one or more of these categories. There's an instant familiarity with this character that is hard to find in others.

Favourites: Pretty much anything that Kurt Busiek, Peter David, Paul Jenkins, Steven Grant, J.M. DeMatteis, Roger Stern, or J. Michael Straczynski has written.

For specific examples:

  • Busiek: Amazing Fantasy #16-18, the entire "Untold Tales" series
  • DeMatteis: "Kraven's Last Hunt", Spectacular Spider-Man #200 (death of Harry)
  • David: "Death Of Jean DeWolff", his entire run on Spectacular Spider- Man
  • Stern: "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut! / To Fight The Unbeatable Foe!" (Amazing Spider-Man 232-3)
  • JMS: The Morlun storyline (Amazing Spider-Man v2 #30 - 36)

Honorable mention goes to Spider-Man Tangled Web #4 (I'm a big Greg Rucka fan), and Deadpool #11: arguably the funniest comic I've ever read. 'Pool gets sent back in time and has to pretend to be Peter Parker and re-enact Amazing Spider-Man #47.

As you can imagine, there are many others.
