Spectacular Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #91

Background

Ever since Felicia Hardy (aka the black cat) came into Peter's life in Amazing Spider-Man #194, she's had a quite an impact ont eh webslingers life. Around the time of Spec 91, they were fighting crime together and sharing a romantic relationship...of course, Peter had recently forbid her from joining in the dangerous parts of his life as spiderman. An edict that Felicia did not have any intention of follwing.

spidey just returned from battelworld and the super hero secret war with a shiny new black costume...with strange powers.

black cat got her bad luck powers from a deal she made with the kingpin in spec 89

she had been looking for him spec 90, and finally found him outside of his Aunt May's house...suffice to say his new look left her a bit confused and panicked...which leads directly into the beginning of spec 91...

General Comments

THis is one of those SPider-Man stories that (whether intentionally or unintentionally) make the argument that Peter Parker is not that great of person.

Let's start with his interactions with Felicia. CHange of heart due to SW, he shouldn't forbid her from doing anying, they kiss and make up.

when they do battle the blob together, peter spends the whole time telling her to stand back and out the way, then hands her teh camera to take pcis. shes then forced to intervene afater spidy is being manhandled by the blob, and her bad luck powers help neutralze the mutant. instead of thankign her and trying to work with her, he once again tells her step aside and that 'hes got if from here

remind you that peter is not aware of her bad luck upgrade and when that bad luck essentially finishes off the blob, peter says that she did a great job out there and that he was being overprotective...but to the best of his knowleedg cat did nothing really to stop the blob. it's just a really wonky roller coaster of emotions from peter.

bottom line, is that he doesnt treat her like an equal, which wouldnt be so bad if he didn't opent he story saying that is what hes going to do.

that doesnt even include he how brushed flahs and his problems aside, kicking him out his apartment the moment he spots felicia outside his window. Not to mention the mess he leave Dewolff in at that tend of the story with the blob wreaking havoc on the rush hour traffic. Peter snarkily responds to DeWolff with, "Your problem Captain! We stopped his destructive rampage...traffic problems we leave to the police! ta-ta!" Well for one, he barely did anything to stop blob, that was all cat (Or luck how he would have probably perceved it). Second one could argue that removing him from the middle of road was as challenging (if not more) than simply stopping his rampage.

was that the symbiote taking over...unlikely they had this planned htis far out...but maybe we can stretch that interpretation a bit to cvero for him.

Either way, Peter/Spidey were not very likeable in this story.
