This story is part of a Lookback Series: What If, Whenever, Wherever...

Background...

The poor, poor Lizard. He just can't catch a break. Not only was he the villain Calypso opted to use as a mindless stooge against Spider-Man in "Torment", but he died and rose again three times. What if, however, he only rose from the dead twice?

Sep 1993 : SM Guest : What If? (Vol. 2)

As Spider-Man tells Martha Connors the news that her husband has been killed, she reacts with both grief and relief. She had been expecting to hear such news for a long time. However, Billy Connors reacts with rage against Spider-Man. One week later, Spider-Man arrives at Midtown General Hospital to meet Martha Connors. Billy has inexplicably lost his right arm. However, before the web-slinger can get to his room, Calypso arrives and gives Billy a drink to make him "just like daddy".

In General...

There really isn't much to say about this story. It's totally unremarkable, and branches off from a story many people don't like to begin with. The characterizations are correct, and that's the best thing I can say about this story. As for the art... well, the art is atrocious. The only one who looks semi-decent is Spider-Man, but that's only because we can't see his face.

Overall Rating...

A mediocre story brought down by atrocious art.
