Feb 1990 : SMURF 328.700 : SM Title : Web of Spider-Man
Characters: Doctor Doom, Green Goblin II (Harry Osborn), Kingpin, Elizabeth (Allan) Osborn, Mary Jane Watson-Parker, Molten Man

Spidey is on top of a building. He is unhappy with his new powers and people are becoming frightened of what he can do. He throws his mask off the building saying he quits. The Wizard is flying past and catches the mask. He takes it back to the group of super-villains and introduces this huge pterodactyl-type creature, called Dragon Man, which he says will be able to track Spider-Man.

Dragon Man tracks Pete to a subway system they battle for a bit, with Spidey saving a train, then burst through the road above out onto the street. Spider- Man is victorious and the crowd cheer him for the first time in ages.

Back at Liz's she gets a phone call from someone she says she fears the most. Sounds like the Molten Man to me...

In General...

Thankfully, we're now just one issue (ASM 329) away from the conclusion of this arc. It started as a reasonable idea but the overkill just, well, killed it. I don't buy Kingpin ganging up with other villains and the characterisation of him - especially as he's only been an influence through the arranger, not actually a character on-page recently - is way off.

The set-up with Liz at the end is pretty much the only redeeming factor and at least gives a lead-in to whatever's coming next. At least it's now time to move away from the freak-of-the-weak gimmick and get Spidey back to normal, minus his extra powers.
