Peter is called to a meeting at the Daily Bugle that includes J. Jonah Jameson, Robbie Robertson, Ned Leeds and Kate Cushing. Knowing that he has been friends with Thompson for years, they want him to get the story. His protestations that he is no writer are ignored. "It's about time he got what he deserved!" declares Leeds. When Robbie asks what it is Leeds has against Thompson, Ned refuses to answer. "With all due respect, Robbie...It's none of your business. Not as long as it doesn't interfere with my job."

In prison, Flash is almost murdered by the self-styled assassin, the Scourge. Spider-Man appears, seemingly out of nowhere, and thwarts the attempt. Flash thinks: "When I was in high school, Spider-man was my hero...And now he's saved my life...even though he knows what I'm here for!"

At the Rose's penthouse, the Hobgoblin is quietly reading of "his" unmasking as the Rose tends to his plants. The Rose gives him an update: "Flash Thompson-- the man currently believed to be the Hobgoblin -- was almost murdered in his cell."

"'Almost.' What a pity. If he had died, I could have moved about with a lot of freedom...until people realized I was still at large."

"Interesting," murmurs the Rose. "And tell me...what made you light upon Thompson as your catspaw in the first place?"

"Why Thompson?" The Hobgoblin, preparing to step onto his glider, pauses. Why not?" Laughing, he speeds away.
