In a deserted train yard someplace in New York City, a train is being converted into an illegal gambling casino. Blasting a hole through its roof, the Hobgoblin swoops in. He tells the cowering proprietor that, in return for 10% of the profits, he will leave the casino alone. Otherwise, he will make life very unpleasant for the casino's patrons. An illegal track betting ring is hit next, with the same demand for protection money. After making the rounds, the Hobgoblin goes to the penthouse apartment of his ally, the Rose. He downplays the Rose's concern about the Kingpin of Crime, and asks to borrow some of the Rose's men for a personal matter. "I want them to pay a business call on some old friends of mine...Mr. and Mrs. Harry Osborn!"

Turning on the news in his apartment, Peter is just in time to hear a name he did not expect to hear again: "The Hobgoblin may well be alive! Numerous eyewitnesses claimed to have seen him gliding over this city's rooftops earlier this afternoon!"

Reflecting that he never entirely believed that the Hobgoblin drowned in the Hudson after their last battle, Spider-Man suits up and prepares to go looking for his enemy. "When I'm finished with him, the Hobgoblin's going to know he's been beaten! He's going to know what is means to face the power of Spider-Man! "
