Comics : Rampage (UK) #4

Background...

For a few years now, UK-based Spidey fans have had a title all of their own - Spectacular Spider-Man (UK) Magazine. A Kids' Magazine, Spectac (UK) features nuthin' but Spidey, including an 11-page original story in every issue. Inspired by his success, Spidey is springboarding into another regular UK appearance in "Rampage", a new magazine for older kids with a focus on console games, TV shows, movies, and all the other cool ways that today's young generation spend time and money.

At least the first few Spidey stories in Rampage are being created by some of the same guys who work on the current Spectacular (UK) Magazine tales. That means that the stories have a similar look and feel, with two major exceptions: Firstly, the stories are only half the length (six pages story plus one page character profiles) and secondly the slightly older audience permits more violence and aggression in the story and art.

Jan 2005 : SM Guest : Rampage (UK)

Spidey is on a crime-spree, wearing Doc Ock's arms. Clearly the two are in cahoots! Normally, we would get a page or two from Jonah Jameson in this kind of situation, but given we're pushed for space, so we have to make do without JJJ this time.

Daredevil hears the TV story, and figures he has to stop his former ally. When Spidey returns to Ock's hideout, we hear Octavius doing his monologue about how he defeated Spidey in battle the previous day, then drugged him, and then programmed the arms to commit crimes. In order to make Spidey look like he was conscious, and hence make everything convincing, the arms give Spidey's body electric shocks to make it twitch and move. Nifty!

Of course, DD has followed Spidey back to Ock's hideout, and feeds him a (previously prepared) antidote. Seems that DD could hear Spidey's heartbeat and worked out that the wall-crawler was unconscious. Now that the wall-crawler has been cleared (well, cleared as far as Daredevil is concerned, the more general PR exercise will have to wait for a bit), and now that DD's antidote has revived Spidey, the two of them easily tag-team to mop up Otto. The End.

In General...

Another tidy little miniature story. Personally, I really struggle to see how Daredevil could have guessed what antidote to use, but maybe that's just being picky. Either way, this is all good harmless fun.

Overall Rating...

Perfectly agreeable, and better than most stories in this kind of situation, let's give it an above average three and a half webs.
