Strength Level: Normal human, for a guy who was kicked out of the C.I.A. for being too violent, among other things.

Powers: During his Jack O'Lantern days, Macendale had no powers.

Abilities: Macendale is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat. His military experience included flight training. He can pilot most forms of airplanes and helicopters.

Equipment: Macendale had a glider which looked like a "sombrero". He also had a very hard helmet, which Spidey enjoyed punching.

Weapons: Ok: sleeping gas grenades, tear gas grenades, smoke grenades and, of course, regular explosive ones. He had energy blasters on his wrists.

Limitations: No super-powers. His awareness of that became an even bigger limitation, in his second villanous identity, as he became obsessed with power.

Background

Jason Phillip Macendale was a C.I.A. agent, whose methods were too violent to his superiors' taste. He got kicked out, and decided to start a life of crime, using his expertise in various fields to aid him. Macendale's life as Jack O'Lantern wasn't very sucessful. He was defeated on his first battle, by Machine-Man. He simulated a coma, to be transported to an Hospital instead of a jail. While taking over the place, he had his first meeting with Spider-Man, and was beaten again, though he realised he was no match for Spidey, and attempted to flee. During his run with the pumpkin on his head, he met Spidey several times, and also ran into Silver Sable. His next encounters with Spidey ended up like the first, until he was hired by the Kingpin, during the Gang War. By that time, he had a partnership with the Hobgoblin (Ned Leeds, posing for Roderick Kingsley), but that dissolved when he refused to chase Spider-Man with the Hobgoblin. He then saw fit that he should be the Hobgoblin, so he hired the Foreigner to kill Ned Leeds (just like Kingsley wanted when he leaked the word that Leeds was the Goblin). When Leeds died, Macendale took the mantle of the Hobgoblin, with the general populace thinking he was the same Goblin, with him thinking he was the second, and with Kingsley knowing he was the fourth. For the rest of Macendale's story, go to Hobgoblin IV's profile.

Macendale has no known connection to the second Jack O'Lantern (Steven Levins) or to Mad Jack, other than that the original image and name were directly ripped off (and the second also used weaponry like his).
